Where to stay

There's no hotels on playa, everyone camps in Black Rock City itself, you bring your own tent, RV, yurt or whatever shelter. For premium feel join or create a theme camp with shade structures, kitchens, sound systems, those offer more comfort like communal meals and protection from dust. If you're new look for placement in established camps through connections or the placement system, but most folks self-organize with friends or small groups. Outside the event Reno has hotels for pre/post, like before heading in or after exodus for recovery, places with pools and AC help a ton. Gerlach nearby has basic motels but they book out fast. On playa it's all about your setup, invest in a good shade (monkey hut or Alaska tent), elevated bed off ground, and serious dust-proofing. No traditional "luxury stays" here, the luxury is the experience and community you build.

Read the Survival Guide twice, seriously, it's the bible for playa life, covers everything from packing to Leave No Trace rules. Bring way more water than you think (1.5-2 gallons per person per day minimum), goggles and masks for whiteouts, closed-toe shoes or boots cause playa dust eats everything. Costumes are key for self-expression, layers for cold nights, headlamp with red light mode, bike (decorated, locked), and gifts to share since gifting is big. Dont bring money, it's cashless except ice and coffee sales, trade or gift instead. Hydrate constantly, electrolytes are lifesavers, pee clear or you're behind. Explore by bike at night when art lights up, join random sound camps or theme events, talk to strangers, that's the magic. For first-timers find your camp early, set up shade fast before heat hits, and pace yourself, burnout is real. Hidden gem: wander deep playa at sunrise for quiet massive art pieces, or hit the Temple during quiet hours for reflection. Pack out everything you bring in, no trace means no MOOP (matter out of place), even tiny glitter or cigarette butts. Safety third, but watch for art cars, bikes, and dust, stay hydrated and connected with your group.
